Feeding and Burping Your Newborn Baby the Right Way

Feeding and burping your baby the right way is very important. That’s no brainer. Unfortunately, most mothers don’t often get it wrong.

You have gone through pregnancy, taken 4D Well-being scan in Cardiff, gone through labor and delivery successfully. Congratulations are in order! Now, you want to ensure that you are feeding and burping your baby the right way to continue the good work you have been doing as a mother. Well, you have come to the right place. You will learn everything you need to know. Read on!

Whether feeding your infant by a bottle or breast, you may be confused as to how often you should do so. It is generally recommended that newborns be fed on demand, that is, whenever they seem hungry.

Babies cue their caretakers differently. Yours may cue you by making sucking noises, putting fingers in their mouth, or crying.

A newborn baby should be fed every two to three hours. If you are formula-feeding your baby, allow him or her to take about 60 to 90 millimeters (2-3 ounces) at each feeding. If you are breastfeeding, give him or her the chance to nurse at each breast for about 1 to 15 minutes.

Some newborn babies may need to be awakened after every few hours to be fed so you can make sure they are having enough food. If your newborn doesn’t seem interested in sucking or eating, or if you have to wake him or her often, call your baby’s doctor.

If your little one tends to be gassy, seems fussy during feeding, or has gastroesophageal reflux, then you should try burping him or her every 5 minutes during breastfeeding or every ounce during bottle-feeding.

    • Here are some of the burping tips to try:

    • Hold your little one upright with their head on your shoulder. Support her back and head as you part the back gently using your other hand

    • Lay your little one face-down on your lap. Support his or her head, making sure that the head is placed higher than their chest. Now, gently rub or pat your baby’s back

    • Sit him or her on your lap. Use one hand to support the baby’s head and chest by cradling his or her chin in your hand’s palm while resting the heel of your hand gently on the baby’s chest. Ensure you are gripping his or her chin and not throat. Gently pat their back using the other hand.
